At the Handelsblatt Hydrogen Summit in May 2023<\/strong>, leading figures from industry, government and technology discussed the role of green hydrogen<\/strong> in the climate transition<\/strong> \u2014 and how Germany might become a global engine of innovation in the field.
On the panel: Carina Stoettner<\/strong> as a foresight expert, alongside Uwe Kerkmann<\/strong>, managing director of H2UB. The conversation was moderated by Kevin Knitterscheid<\/strong>.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Rethinking innovation: setting standards, shaping the future<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Carina Stoettner<\/strong> argued that the transition isn’t only about the energy source itself, but about how we build an industry around it<\/strong>:<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

“This isn’t just about using hydrogen. It’s about helping define the global standards with every innovation, every component, every valve built to handle it.”<\/em><\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Every component developed and manufactured in Germany, she said, is a lever: for a share of the economic value<\/strong>, for technology exports<\/strong> \u2014 and for an active German role<\/strong> in the global hydrogen market.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Hydrogen as part of a wider climate transition<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

The discussion made clear that hydrogen is not the whole answer<\/strong> but one central building block<\/strong> in a much larger systemic shift.
The climate transition<\/strong> has to be thought about well beyond clean energy supply \u2014 toward new models of production, innovation and value creation<\/strong>.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

\r\n

“The decisive question isn’t only how a product becomes green. It’s how it becomes green AND commercially relevant,”<\/em> Stoettner said.<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Industry leading the way: the Salzgitter example<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Particular attention went to Salzgitter AG<\/strong> and CEO Gunnar Groebler<\/strong>. Salzgitter is among the first companies in Germany to commit fully to hydrogen-based steel production<\/strong> \u2014 a signal to the entire sector.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

\r\n

“When companies like Salzgitter move boldly, they take on a pioneering role \u2014 technologically, commercially and socially,”<\/em> Stoettner said.<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

The takeaway: shaping the future through innovation<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

The Hydrogen Summit made one thing clear: if Germany wants to hold its own in global competition, clean energy sources won’t be enough on their own.
