Shaping the Future Instead of Managing It — Spotting Opportunities and Acting on Them

That was the theme of the fifth Female Finance Roundtable, held in mid-June 2026 and hosted by WTS Advisory. As in previous years, the event was full of thought-provoking talks, lively discussion and open exchange among the many women taking part.

One thing came through especially clearly: in challenging times above all, what matters is focusing on possibilities rather than risks, identifying where you actually have room to act, and treating change as an opportunity.

The future as a space full of opportunity

In her talk, Carina Stoettner made a compelling case for questioning established ways of thinking and seeing the future not as a threat but as something to be shaped.

Anyone who wants to shape the future actively has to get past their own patterns of perception first — above all the negativity bias and the normalcy bias, which lead us to overestimate risk and underestimate change.

The key is not to think in terms of the future but in terms of futures. Letting individual trends steer you less, and thinking in scenarios instead, expands your capacity to act considerably. And the distinction matters: scenarios aren’t forecasts. They don’t predict anything — they open up room to think.

Which requires one thing above all: time and space for new perspectives to emerge in the first place.

Sustainability as a strategic factor

Gyri Reiersen offered valuable insight into what sustainability and forward-looking action mean for companies and the people making decisions in them.

She showed vividly what a volcanic eruption in Iceland has to do with the emergence of democracy — a striking example of how profoundly ecological events can shape the course of societies.

She pointed to research suggesting that the share of uninhabitable land could rise from 1% to 19% by 2070, with roughly 3.5 billion people having to relocate as a result.

Artificial intelligence and sustainability, in her view, stand in a double relationship: in tension with one another on one hand, and on the other with real potential to complement each other — for instance where AI can bring sustainability data up to the standard of financial data far faster. Her conclusion: both AI and sustainability will be needed to stay competitive.

The future of the circular economy: Carina Stöttner speaks at IFAT for the steel and metal recycling industry

Munich, IFAT 2026 — the world’s leading trade fair for environmental technology. Four people share a stage to work through a question that could hardly matter more to Europe’s industrial future: where is the circular economy heading — toward a high-tech, globally integrated system? Or will protectionism and geopolitical fragmentation pull it back from the international stage?

The session was hosted by BDSV, the German association of steel recycling and waste management companies, and VDM, the German association of metal traders and recyclers — two bodies currently merging into the future Circular Metal Association. On the panel: Murat Bayram, Andreas Schwenter, Prof. Frank Pothen — and futurist Carina Stöttner, whose short keynote set the frame for the discussion.

What emerged reaches well beyond the sector itself: steel and metal recycling is one of the places where it will be decided whether Europe stays industrially sovereign — and whether it does so in a way that holds up over time.

The underestimated industry: what already exists

Before talking about the future, it’s worth looking at the present. In Germany alone, roughly 10,000 circular economy companies account for some 300,000 jobs. Across Europe, the figure runs into several million. Family-run mid-sized firms, specialist plant builders, highly automated sorting operations — over the past decades they have invested billions in shredding plants, modern processing technology and AI-assisted sorting.

Murat Bayram’s message on the panel was accordingly blunt: this industry needs to stop talking itself down. Recycling operations aren’t a burden on the environment — they are, in Andreas Schwenter’s words, environmental protection facilities. They secure raw materials, avoid CO₂, make green steel possible and lay the foundation for industrial value creation in Europe.

Prof. Frank Pothen supplied the economic backing: every ton of recycled steel scrap avoids substantial CO₂ emissions. The circular economy isn’t a footnote to climate policy — it’s the practical core of it.

It was into this picture that Carina Stöttner delivered her talk — and opened up the view forward.

Stöttner’s scenarios: possible futures for the circular economy

Her opening question was deliberately pointed: where is our industrial economy heading? And what does that mean for the steel, metal and recycling sector?

  • Scenario A — the high-tech circular economy. A globally integrated circular economy in which AI sorting, robotics, new materials science, digital material passports and international cooperation reinforce one another. Recycling rates climb sharply, secondary raw materials reach primary-grade quality, and Europe becomes the technology leader in a growth market.
  • Scenario B — the customers leave. Production shifts largely overseas, and with it goes both the raw material in the form of production scrap and the demand for recycled material.
  • Scenario C — the fragmented protectionist economy. Rising protectionism, new export bans, regional walls. The industry loses economies of scale, investment capacity and the pressure to innovate. The circular economy remains necessary, but never becomes a global growth market.

Her point: which scenario arrives isn’t a forecast. It’s a decision. And that decision is being made right now — in Brussels, in Berlin, in supervisory boards, in investment committees.

Deep tech as the formula for the circular economy’s future

What Stöttner made particularly clear at IFAT: the next stage of the circular economy is a deep tech stage.

In practice, that means:

  • AI-assisted sorting and material identification, delivering secondary raw materials at grades only primary materials reach today
  • Robotics in the disassembly of complex products — from electric vehicles to wind turbines to electronics
  • New materials and processes that build recyclability into product design from the outset
  • International cooperation in research, standards and trade, because no single market is large enough to carry these investments alone

The trade-off: when protection weakens the industry it’s meant to protect

This is exactly where Stöttner’s keynote met the associations’ pointed position on the panel. Andreas Schwenter and Murat Bayram were unambiguous on one point: protectionism, export bans and additional trade barriers are not a strategy for the future.

The reasoning isn’t ideological — it’s industrial:

  • Close off markets and you drain the industry’s investment capacity. Recycling technology scales with global sales markets, not with domestic leftovers.
  • Restrict scrap exports and you slow innovation. International competition is precisely what built the German recycling industry into the leader it is today.
  • Bet on self-sufficiency and you lose quality. Secondary raw materials require specialization, material purity and international flows. Closed systems produce lower grades at higher cost.
  • Bury mid-sized firms in bureaucracy and you weaken the backbone of the whole system. The ten thousand companies carrying it need conditions that enable rather than obstruct.

None of which argues against sovereignty. It argues for intelligent sovereignty rather than a reflex to build walls. Strategic reserves, diversified flows of critical materials, European standards — yes. Blanket long-term export bans and new barriers — no.

Stöttner’s contribution: an industry that pulls up the drawbridge buys short-term security and loses its long-term future. The circular economy worth aiming for is open, cooperative and technologically ambitious — not defensive.

What the industry needs now: less nostalgia, more nerve

Four imperatives for the years ahead emerged from the panel and Stöttner’s keynote — not as finished answers, but as the right questions:

  1. Confidence, not justification. For decades this industry has been solving in practice what others demand in theory. That record belongs in the public story about climate protection and industrial sovereignty.
  2. Deep tech investment now. AI, robotics, new materials and digital traceability are past the pilot stage. They are the sector’s base technologies for the next twenty years.
  3. Conditions that enable. Less bureaucracy, faster permitting, reliable energy and trade policy — so that investment happens in Europe rather than elsewhere.
  4. International cooperation as strategy. European strength won’t come from going it alone, but from alliances with global partners, shared standards and open markets — while retaining sovereignty in genuinely critical areas.

The announced merger of BDSV and VDM into the Circular Metal Association fits that line exactly: more clout, more common ground, more future — and an industry finally positioning itself the way it has long since been built.

The takeaway: the future of the circular economy can be shaped

Stöttner’s central message at IFAT: the future isn’t written. It can be shaped.

Whether Europe builds a global high-tech circular economy or retreats into a fragmented protectionist one won’t be settled by forecasts. It will be settled in the next rounds of investment, in the next wave of European regulation, in whether the industry takes its own strength seriously — and whether policymakers have the nerve to open up room for possibility rather than close it down.

The Future of Industry, the Future of the Economy: Why Germany Needs to Bet on Radical Innovation Now

A look back at futurist Carina Stoettner’s closing keynote at LEON 2026 — and what she had to say about the future of industrial work, resilience and the risks of protectionism taken too far.

When the futurist takes the podium

It’s 5:15 p.m. at the Casals Forum in Kronberg. A long day of talks lies behind the hundred or so decision-makers from business, academia, government and the Bundeswehr. The day’s main threads — resilience, security, financing the transition, the Mittelstand as an anchor of stability — have all been drawn. Then Carina Stoettner takes the stage and asks the question: where might German industry and the German economy actually be heading?

Stoettner is a futurist — not a forecaster extending charts ten years into the future, but someone who works with companies, ministries and education providers to make desirable futures concrete. Her closing keynote, “The Future of Industrial Work,” wasn’t a full stop but a starting gun: for a debate that has been conducted too technocratically in Germany for too long — and now needs a direction.

Resilience isn’t defense — it’s the ability to build a future

All day, resilience had been the leitmotif of LEON 2026. Economics Minister Kaweh Mansoori had called it the decisive precondition for competitiveness. Stoettner picked the term up — and turned it around.

Resilience, as her keynote had it, isn’t an attempt to defend a status quo against an uncertain world. Resilience is the ability to stay capable of acting despite disruptive change — and by means of it — and to shape futures worth having. Treat resilience as a shield and you build bunkers. Understand it as the capacity to shape things and you build platforms.

That set the frame for the keynote’s two main strands: deep tech and radical innovation on one side, education and the future of work on the other.

Deep tech and radical innovation: Germany’s real competitiveness question

Germany has an innovation paradox. Strong in research, strong in patents, strong in its Mittelstand — and still behind the US and China across many key technologies. Stoettner offered a diagnosis that landed in the room: we have perfected incremental innovation and structurally lost the habit of radical innovation.

Deep tech — technologies carrying high scientific risk and long development horizons, from quantum computing to synthetic biology to new energy and materials systems — requires different conditions from the optimizing innovation that German industry grew up on:

  • Longer capital horizons than the typical German financing mix currently offers
  • Greater tolerance for failure, both inside companies and in the logic of public funding
  • Tighter integration of frontier research and industrial scaling, rather than sequential handovers across interfaces that take years
  • Talent that thinks across disciplines and can move between the lab, the codebase and the factory floor

The trade-offs of protectionism: when resilience becomes a cage

Stoettner devoted perhaps the most delicate part of her keynote to a question the current industrial-policy debate tends to sail around: what happens when protectionism goes too far?

Resilience and sovereignty are legitimate goals — necessary ones, even. But they have a downside that honest industrial policy has to name:

  • Innovation lost to isolation. Reorganizing critical inputs on a purely national basis costs more than higher unit prices — it costs the competitive pressure and knowledge exchange that drive innovation. Closed systems age faster than open ones.
  • Capital and talent flight. Researchers, founders and investors choose ecosystems where they can scale. Overdone protectionism sends a signal: this is a place that defends, not one that builds.
  • The strategic cost of the subsidy spiral. Every industry kept in the country by subsidy ties up money that would have bought more future elsewhere — in deep tech, education, infrastructure. Industrial policy is always also an allocation decision against alternative futures.
  • Reciprocity risk. Protective measures provoke protective measures. In an escalating protectionist spiral, an export nation like Germany loses structurally more than more closed economies do.
  • Democratic erosion. When “strategic industries” becomes a permanent category, the entanglements between the state and large corporations grow — and over time they weaken competition and renewal.

Her argument wasn’t a naive call for free trade but a case for proportion: resilience where security genuinely demands it and no other route exists — and openness everywhere else, because openness remains the real source of innovation and prosperity. The future worth aiming for doesn’t lie in maximum self-sufficiency but in intelligent sovereignty built on partnership.

What remains: three imperatives for the coming decade

Three imperatives can be distilled from Stoettner’s keynote — applicable to any industrial economy, and to Hesse in particular:

  1. Bet on deep tech and radical innovation. Incremental improvement is table stakes now, not an advantage. The real work is financing, organizing and scaling technologies with ten- and fifteen-year horizons — starting now.
  2. Think about education and work across a whole working life. Not curricula but learning architectures. Not training as a project but learning as infrastructure.
  3. Balance resilience with openness. Sovereignty where it’s indispensable. Openness everywhere else — as the source of innovation, talent and economic strength.

About the congress: LEON 2026 in Wiesbaden

On 6 May 2026, representatives from business, academia, government and security institutions came together at the Casals Forum in Wiesbaden for LEON, the new business and industry congress for the German state of Hesse. The guiding theme: resilience as the decisive competitiveness question of the 21st century.

Three threads held the day together:

  • Resilience is becoming a competitiveness question — given fragile supply chains, geopolitical tension and rising energy and security demands.
  • Industry, innovation and security can no longer be thought about separately. Key technologies like AI and new materials have civilian and security applications.
  • From a knowledge problem to an implementation problem. “We don’t have a knowledge problem, we have an implementation task,” as Economics Minister Kaweh Mansoori put it in his opening remarks.

The main stage program was complemented by 13 breakout sessions on subjects including cutting red tape, cybersecurity, sustainable industry, financing transformation and security cooperation — plus a poetic and musical wrap-up to close the day.

LEON is designed as a long-term platform. In Mansoori’s words, it sees itself as the beginning of a dialogue meant to shape the years ahead: “The future of Hesse as a place for innovation and industry is being decided right now.”

Keynote at the Bavarian Tourism Day 2025

The Bavarian Tourism Day 2025 was all about working together. Under the theme “From Talking to Doing: Cooperation as a Success Factor in Tourism”, one thing came through clearly: turning good ideas into lasting action only works collectively.

Carina Stoettner delivered the keynote, “Zeitenwende? A Society in Change,” inviting the audience to see change as an opportunity rather than a threat. The more complex our environment becomes, she argued, the more we need shared responsibility and new kinds of community.
The questions she explored:
➡️ Which social challenges do we have to overcome today in order to build a future worth living in?
➡️ What are the essential pillars of trust?
➡️ How can the “quiet majority” get louder — and why does that matter so much?
➡️ And how, in an age of AI and social media bubbles, do we get back to emphasizing what we have in common rather than what divides us?

Practical examples from Bavaria and beyond — Trans Bayerwald, the Übergangshaus Lübeck, the AzubiTopHotels and the Donaulimes museum network — showed vividly how cooperation works in practice and what it can achieve.

Industry scenarios and innovation: why thinking ahead has become a strategic necessity

One thinking error persists stubbornly across many established industries: the assumption that things will somehow carry on as they always have. This normalcy bias is one of the biggest brakes on innovation we have. Companies that don’t actively push back against it risk sleeping through disruptive change.

Industry scenarios as a strategic early warning system

Which is exactly why scenarios for the future of an industry are a crucial part of strategic innovation work. They make potential paths visible — and reveal early on which kinds of innovation each scenario calls for. Digital business models, circular production, resilient supply chains: thinking through the future of your own sector lets you prepare innovation deliberately rather than simply react.

Four scenarios, four directions for innovation

At the launch of Innovation for Growth at IPAI in Heilbronn, I presented four industry scenarios showing how the conditions around us are shifting — and which innovation strategies answer each of them.

Foresight + innovation = futures literacy

The key lies in connecting foresight with innovation. Building decisions on well-grounded assumptions about the future means deploying resources more precisely, calculating innovation risk more accurately and creating real competitive advantage. That’s what makes a company fit for what’s ahead.

A case in point: ebm-papst and Tomas Smetana

ebm-papst, under Prof. Tomas Smetana, is a striking example of how to restructure not just operationally but structurally. Through strategic innovation the company has managed to question its own field of business and develop it into something built to last — starting from a clear picture of the future and a willingness to leave old patterns behind.

At the event in Heilbronn I was struck by how openly ebm-papst discusses its own business model — and by the nerve it takes to follow new thinking through.

Transformation starts in the mind

The conversations that evening confirmed something again: being ready for the future isn’t a question of technology alone. It starts with the capacity to question yourself, to make bold decisions — and to orient toward the markets that are coming.

My thanks to Tomas Smetana, Lucas Sauberschwarz, Christine Grübel, Dr. Lysander Weiß, Guido H. Baltes and Philipp Dehn for the stimulating conversations and ideas. Innovation for Growth is a real invitation to shift perspective — and a case for thinking in futures.

Investing with Foresight at Erste Group in Vienna — Keynote and Panel

Last week I had the chance to share my perspective at the beautifully organized She Invests event hosted by Erste Group in Vienna — first in a keynote, then on a panel with supervisory board member Caroline Kuhnert, platform specialist Christine Bachler, board member Maximilian Clary and finance expert Olga Miler. A strong line-up, and one that showed just how much thinking about the future and making smart financial decisions matter right now.

Here are my main takeaways:

💶 The past guarantees nothing about the future.
Just because an investment performed well in the past doesn’t mean it will keep working. Our biggest thinking error is usually extrapolating from yesterday, or today, to tomorrow. What looked safe yesterday can disappear tomorrow — Kodak being the obvious example. And what’s hyped today may well be irrelevant in twenty or thirty years. My advice: keep the big picture in view instead of chasing short-term trends.

💶 Get past the negativity bias.
When everything looks bleak, plenty of people think: “I may as well spend my money now.” But what if things turn out well? Working through several possible futures deliberately leads to better decisions and better long-term security.

💶 More confidence with technology, and fair financial arrangements.
Women should be bolder about getting to grips with technological trends. And talk through fair financial arrangements with your partner early. Having provided for yourself means staying calmer in a crisis, having more professional flexibility, and making better decisions over the long run.

💶 People still make the difference.
Technology can simplify saving, analyze data and create transparency. But in emotional or critical moments, you still need a real person to talk to. As we discussed on the panel, the data is unambiguous: portfolios belonging to customers who combine digital tools with personal advice perform better. Which is what makes hybrid solutions convincing — Erste Group’s George app, for instance, where you can still reach an actual human in person or by phone when it counts.

A bit of a shame that George is only available in Austria.
